to be frank...

I swear, I hadn't eaten a hotdog for something like 20 years. All of a sudden, I am vegan and I find out about Lord of the Fries. I consider myself pretty healthy and mostly wholefoodie. But I ate that Chicago Dog and I was in junk food heaven. My man likes them too, so, now for a treat I make them at home. I buy the 'Vegi Deli' brand dogs and build the rest myself.


PIMP YOUR DAWG ...

(makes 1 dog)


1 baguette cut to size or hot dog bun (I like soft bread here, I don't want to have to be fierce to get a bite!)

1 'Vegi Deli' hot dog sausage

3 tbsp aioli (recipe under dressings & sauces)

1/4 cup vegan cheddar shreds (I used bio cheese)

3 pickled jalapeno peppers (I bought mine)

1/4 cup sliced red capsicum

1/4 brown onion sliced into rings

3 cherry tomatoes cut in half

6 slices of cucumber

1 spring onion stem sliced

3 sprigs of dill (or whatever herbs you have about...)

1 tbsp maple syrup

2 tbsp red wine vinegar

1 tsp salt


Chop your veggies & herbs then put them into a bowl, add the maple, salt & vinegar and toss. Let them sit while you organise everything else. Boil some water & put the dog in to heat, this takes about 3-5 minutes. Cut the bun, spread with mustard on one side and aioli on the other. Load up with vegan cheddar shreds. Now is a good time to pop the bun under the grill if you want the cheese all melty. Put the dog in the bun, top with the pickles, some more aioli, some tomato sauce or sriarcha if you are into chilli. I added the jalapenos and some sesame seeds as well. The options are endless, sauerkraut, avocado, go mexican with salsa and corn or vietnamese with carrot, daikon, coriander and sweet chilli, classic american style with mustard, sliced onions, cheese & ketchup ... ok, STOP.
